Audi AI:CON Concept Car

Announced to collective “ooohs” and “aaahs” at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Audi Aicon joins the Audi AI:ME, Audi AI:RACE and Audi AI:TRAIL electric concept cars from the company that made ‘vorsprung durch Technik’ a thing. It’s rumoured to go into production in 2021 as a pilot project, but in all honesty, you’re more likely to win one of Wonka’s golden tickets than getting your hands on one of these babies. Production numbers are set to be extremely limited, so why not consider something from Audi’s pre-existing all-electric line-up, like the Audi e-Tron GT or the Audi e-Tron Sportback 55. Design

The AI:CON design
While Audi are no stranger to electric cars – the Audi Q4 e-Tron is a favourite of ours – the Audi AI:CON concept car is pushing the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence. Fully autonomous driving is the name of the game, incorporating the Level 5 autonomous driving technology that Audi has been not-so-secretly working on. Oh, and they reckon it will have a range of 435-498 miles and will be just a tad bigger than the combustion Audi A8.

Interiors

Slightly scary exteriors
If it looks a little familiar, that’s because the AI:CON’s front features the same inverted hexagonal Singleframe (eh?) as the Audi e-tron Sportback. And because headlights aren’t ‘future’ enough, the AI:CON will instead have fully digital display surfaces made up of hundreds of triangular pixel segments. Pixel segments that are actually 3D Audi AI symbols. And in true concept car x Artificial Intelligence, the headlights will make ‘eye contact’ with pedestrians or other cars and follow them with its digital ‘eyes’. They can even project warnings onto the road. Smart.

Exteriors

Lounge-like interiors
Audi are wanting the Aicon to become more of a third living space between home and work, rather than just an EV to get you from A to B. They are pushing the boundaries of what an electric car should be, taking out the traditional cockpit, steering wheel and pedals to create, ultimately, a lounge on wheels. More important to the Audi Aicon will be the most state-of-the-art, futuristic digital infotainment and communications system, and we can’t bloody wait.
