Never heard of Aiways? Us neither until a couple years ago. But keep your eyes peeled and you may see a few Aiways U5 – the company’s flagship electric SUV – hitting UK roads by the end of the year. Looking like a mash-up of a Mitsubishi and a Toyota, we really dig it. It’s available in two trims: the monochromatic Default and the colourful Premium. It’s super spacious, has a great range and is full of next-gen tech, much like similar electric SUVs the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona. Final specs of the U5 have just been released, and we think they’re pretty ace. From its minimalist design to next-gen tech like the floating touchscreen and adaptive cruise control, the U5 gets a big thumbs up from us. Design

Hey good lookin’

See, you can have brains and beauty. EV innovation didn’t just stop at performance and tech. Admire the view through a panoramic sunroof. Marvel at boot space. Or swoon at the aerodynamic sculpting.

  • Cargo space

    Just too much space to fill
    The boot has a chunky volume of 432 litres. If you somehow have even more stuff, there’s even more storage space under the loading floor. And even more under that. Fold down the back seats, and you’ll get a total of 1,543 litres too.

  • Driver display

    3’s the magic number
    What’s better than one driver display? Three. Angled gently towards the driver behind the wheel are three HD screens (4.2”/7”/4.2”) showing everything you need to know: speed, battery status, remaining range and even navigation.

  • Exterior

    Sexy, sleek SUV
    The Aiways U5 has an elegant and dynamic aesthetic. All the characteristics of an SUV, but an aerodynamic one. Door handles are flush, it’s got an air-guiding spoiler and as a nice tweak, the charging point is below the left headlight.

  • Interior space

    Plenty of leg-and-headroom
    Even people of a lofty two metres tall will have plenty of leg room without banging their noggins on the roof. Due to the ‘sandwich’ battery design there’s plenty of room inside. If you’re shorter, the same applies.

  • Rear lights

    Check out its behind
    OK, so we love the L-shaped LED front lights. But the real party is in the back. Layered to fit the shape of the car, the U5’s rear lights run across the width of the car like a skinny lightsabre and we love it.

  • Steering wheel

    Be there, be square
    Who said steering wheels had to be round? Flattening out the top and the bottom – a squircle, if you will – allows greater visibility of the driver display, and also more room for your legs underneath. You can even adjust its height.

  • Touchscreen

    Touch it
    A rather magnificent 12.3” touchscreen floats in the middle of the U5 dashboard. This is your control centre. Open the sunroof. Mirror your phone screen. It's anti-glare and even anti-fingerprint.
Safety

Almost too safe

The Aiways U5 isn’t just wicked fast, it’s wicked safe too. Jam-packed with safety features, it's stupidly simple to drive and park. And most importantly, they make it kinda difficult to crash too.

  • Autopark

    My mum can park it...
    ...and she can’t park. Press the automatic parking switch, step on the brake pedal, and watch as the car magically manoeuvres itself into a free space. It will even alert you where these free spaces are. Magic.

  • Battery

    Feeling peckish?
    Aiways have improved battery packs with their ‘sandwich’ structure. Less tasty than it sounds, they added an extra plate between the battery and the cooling plate. This makes the battery safer and more stable.

  • Blind spot

    You kinda can't crash it
    All these ultrasonic cameras mean it’s difficult to bump into something you shouldn’t. The U5 features an automatic emergency brake if something comes into your path, as well as notifying you of objects in your blind spot.

  • Cameras / Sensors

    Say cheese!
    12 ultrasonic radars, 5 HD cameras, 3 millimetre wave radars and 2 indoor cameras ensure a gapless 360-degree view around the U5, making sure that no matter how tight the gap or how blind the spot, you’re always kept out of trouble. 

  • CarPlay / Android Auto

    No selfies at the wheel
    We don’t like putting down our phones either, but when you’re driving you gotta. Luckily, the U5 is equipped with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ so you can mirror your phone and apps right onto the central touchscreen.

  • Forward collision

    Look out ahead
    Never rear end anyone with the forward collision warning (FCW) feature. This nifty feature uses sensors to detect if an object – stationary or slow moving - is too close in front. Alerts let you know so you can brake in time.

  • Lane assist

    No more lane swerving
    LDW (lane departure warning) lets you know when you’ve accidentally started drifting out of lane. Audio alerts let you know so you can keep on the straight and narrow all the way home.

  • Traffic jam assist

    Gets you out of a jam
    Do you hate the monotonous stop and start of a traffic jam? Us too. With TJA (traffic jam assist), let the car do the driving. Essentially low speed cruise control you can sit back and relax while the car does the going and braking for you.

  • Traffic sign assist

    Read the signs
    Never miss a speed limit change again with TSR (traffic sign recognition). This awesome feature scans the road ahead and pings any important sign changes to your driver display right in front of you.

The Aiways U5 is so much more than top-line specs. Just because it’s electric doesn’t mean compromising on performance or cool innovative tech. Check these little beauties out.

    Charging for the impatient
    The Aiways U5 is a super quick charger. Capable of taking a 90kWh hypercharger, plug it into any normal fast charge and fill the 63kWh battery from 30-70% in just 27 minutes. It also comes with an AC charger.

  • Climate control

    Now that's compromise
    You run hot while your friend runs cold? Nae problem. The U5 has dual-zone automatic climate control meaning you and your front passenger can adjust their own temperatures. This can even run when the engine is off if stuck in traffic.

    Aiways sent two prototypes on a road trip around Europe. Driving over 15,000km across 2 continents and 13 borders, this car holds the world record for longest journey by an electric vehicle prototype. Awesome.
