Putting the E into, erm, SUV, the Q8 e-tron is a pure electric twist on Audi’s popular Q8 crossover range (and a completely different model to petrols and diesels that share the name BTW). So if you crave an off-roader’s raised driving position and super slick design with zero emissions and maximum tech, you’re not just getting warm by checking out the Q8 e-tron, you’re red smoking hot.

Take your pick from 50 or 55 specs and four different trim levels. The 50 gets a thrusty 340PS and a chunky 95kWh battery, the 55 dials up performance and range with 408PS and a 114kWh lithium-ion whopper. Then it’s just a case of cherry-picking from Sport, S Line, Black Edition or Vorsprung trims.

All are lavished with kit and tech, but bigger is better in this game, baby.

    Nearly everything is replaced by touchscreen these days, but the grippy gear selector is a pleasingly tactile experience. Just prod forwards or backwards to select drive or reverse respectively (or hit P to park), and you’re good to go.

    The e-Tron hasn’t undergone a radical styling that screams I’M AN EV! Instead, its classic aerodynamic SUV profile, hexagonal grill frame and expansive light strip across its rear sends it undercover for the more conservative EV drivers.

    The Audi e-tron is one of the quietest electric cars out there. Even at motorway speeds it’s a near-silent operation with the interior acoustics suppressing road noise and wind buffeting.

    The e-tron is a bit like Mystic Meg with its Pre-Sense feature. Monitoring traffic for potential collision hazards, depending on the situation it will either give a warning sound, brake, tighten seatbelts or close the windows and sunroof.

    With progressive steering, the e-tron enhances dynamics and comfort. It does this by monitoring the driving situation and regulating the steering accordingly. Using a variable steering ratio, it makes your ride super-duper smooth.

    Making sure all essential information is visible at the flick of an eye, the 12.3” Audio Virtual Cockpit is a high-res LCD display that shows all the usual stuff like speed and range, as well as navigation, climate control, the radio and more.
